The yoik Dolat by Ánnámáret deals with the cyclic understanding of time. The twirling and dancing of the fire embers takes one’s spirit to the world of one’s ancestors, where their flames await for us, teaching us our part in the continuum of generations. Fire is at the root of human culture, as a tool and as a place for social gatherings and storytelling. The yoik and the visual material of the video are based on it’s symbolism and power. However, the video simultaneously, with its digital effects, refers to and is aware of its own media, acknowledging on the one hand internet fireplace videos and on the other the scratched films and avantgarde of early experimental cinema.
