Ánnámáret released a new version of the Hosanna hymn with a beautiful music video
Ánnámáret released a new version of the Hosanna hymn in Sámi language on the 1st of December 2024 called Hosianna. A music video directed by Kevin Francett was also released. The music video is shooted in the region, where Ánnámáret lives and it shows the beauty of the arctic nature just before the polar night. The new version of the hymn was ordered by the Finnish Christmas radio Jouluradio. They release a new version of the hymn every year. This year the new version of the hymn was composed and sung by Ánnámáret and arranged and produced by musician Sami Zimmemann.
- I wanted to make a version that mixed different elements. I ended up incorporating Sámi yoik elements into Hosianna and making my own version of the Hosianna melody. But the basis is the original Hosianna," says Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman.
- The finished version is a modern art-pop song with influences and elements from many directions. But it is not meant to represent the music of any people or region in general, although the language inevitably adds that angle," says Sami Zimmermann, who arranged and produced the song.
Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman is a musician who performs Sámi music. She is known by her stage name Ánnámáret. She is currently pursuing a doctorate at the Folk Music Department of the Sibelius Academy. Her research is focused on yoiku or luohti, a traditional North Sami vocal music.
Hosianna became a power song
Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman says that this Hosianna became a power song for her. In this version, the Hosianna is the source of the colour scheme of the polar night. Cold and blue - beautiful light and snow. The mood at the beginning of the song is one of despair, reflecting the current state of the world. The song grows and the interpretation intensifies as the song progresses.
- Yes, what I want to say with this version of Hosianna is that we should take care of each other and be tolerant of different peoples and cultures. I wish for peace on earth. This became a power songfor me," says Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman.
It is important to her that a Sámi version of Hosianna was made.
- All Sámi languages are endangered. That's why having Sámi languages, and in this case North Sámi, on such a large stage is a great example to Sámi youth that you can do anything with Sámi language, for example a new version of Hosianna in Sámi language," says Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman.
Producer Sami Zimmermann says that this Hoosanna is of great importance because the language is hardly heard or seen outside the Sámi region. The visibility and belonging through this is certainly meaningful for the community. What message do you want to convey to listeners with this version of Hooosianna?
- Be still for a sonic journey, let the music flow and let the thoughts awaken themselves," says Zimmermann.
