Ánnámáret creates breathtaking and intense collisions between Sámi joik, somber electronic tones, and inspirations from Arctic nature. Through her visionary interpretations of ancient traditions, the Sámi singer seeks her roots while simultaneously taking the audience on a journey across the tundra. We look forward to presenting Ánnámáret as she brings her new album Bálvvosbáiki to ALICE in November.

The Sámi musician and singer Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman, who is behind the artist name Ánnámáret, grew up between two cultures: the modern Finnish and the traditional Sámi. Through her studies of archival recordings of the unique singing style joik, Ánnámáret has learned the tradition from the nomadic reindeer herders and created her own interpretation of the style. In Ánnámáret’s work, joik is supported by somber electronic soundscapes created in collaboration with Finnish musician Turkka Inkilä, as well as musician Ilkka Heinonen’s string playing on the traditional lyre instrument jouhikko. Together, the trio creates breathtaking and intense encounters between the old and the new, evoking thoughts of Arctic landscapes as well as desolate industrial scenes.

A concert with Ánnámáret is an audiovisual experience, where images from video artist Marja Viitahuhta are in constant dialogue with the music, providing the audience with a holistic experience of Sámi culture. Images of reindeer, Sámi nomads, and lonely landscapes underscore the themes in Ánnámáret’s joik and take the audience on a journey across the tundra. Ánnámáret released her second album Bálvvosbáiki in August this year. In the album, she explores everyday life for the Sámi in 2024 and how ancient Sámi traditions continue to resonate in the modern age. Ánnámáret is an artist who must both be seen and heard, which can be experienced in November when she takes the stage at ALICE with her audiovisual show.

No strangers to Scottish audiences, Hebrides Ensemble bring a characteristically intriguing programme, full of contrast and colour, to Nordic Music Days.  

They are joined by vocalist Ánnámáret for music by Krister Hansén, and by Clare Johnston and musicians from the Disabled Artist Network in a new work that explores the similarities and connections between Scottish and Nordic languages and dialects.

Hans Abrahamsen’s virtuosic solo violin piece explores the potential offered by the open strings of the instrument, and Naomi McGillivray’s graphic score – a work of art in itself – has the poetry of Kenneth McCaig at its heart.

The programme also includes a work by Thomas Djønne which was given its first performance by the Hebrides Ensemble as part of the Swedish Chamber Games project.

Bálvvosbáiki (meaning place of worship) is a work in which indigenous Sámi yoik is combined with electronic music, Carelian bowed lyre, and video art. Based on the yoiks of the Sámi artist Ánnámáret, this work explores and expresses how the Sámi relationship with nature, the ancient religion of nature, and the Sámi worldview continue to manifest themselves in Sámi life today.

The yoiks question and reflect on what remains of the Sámi worldview in this time, and are surprised how it is possible to preserve it under centuries of cultural pressure.

Ánnámáret is an indigenous Sámi yoiker with unique yoik voice and interpretation. With her band and visual artist she has created an audiovisual world. It combines Ánnámáret yoiks with the electronic music and video art. Ánnamáret's music is inspired by life and nature in Sápmi as well as Sámi cosmology, spirituality and philosophy. She has realized two solo albums with her band: Nieguid duovdagat (2021) and Bálvvosbáiki (2024). Her concert for the finissage of the 20. European Cultural Days: Sápmi combines Sámi singing with Karelian sounds: Ánnamárets Luohti are accompanied by Ilkka Heinonen, who plays the Karelian lyre Jouhikko.

Ánnámáret, Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman is a Sámi yoiker. She released her first yoik album Nieguid duovdagat with her band in February 2021. Before that Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman has released two solo albums with Ánnámáret Ensemble (Beallječiŋat 2011 and Gollehelmmot 2016). She has operated as a solo artist in many Sámi music productions.

Ilkka Heinonenis a musician and composer, who specialises in folk music. His instruments include the Finnish bowed lyre, G-violone and the contrabass. In addition to bands that have gained influence from European folk music cultures, Heinonen has worked as both a solo artist and in an orchestra, in concerts and in projects of modern and traditional music.

Bálvvosbáiki on konsertti, jonka kokonaisuuden muodostavat luohtit eli pohjoissaamelaiset joiut, elektroninen musiikki, jouhikko ja videotaide. Saamelaistaiteilija Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman antautuu joikaamalla luohtin näyttämään maailmaan omista lähtökohdistaan ja yhdessä työryhmänsä kanssa.  

Näkkäläjärvi-Länsmanin säveltämät luohtit pohtivat, miten saamelainen maailmankuva ilmenee tässä ajassa. Vieläkö vanhat naisjumalat Sáráhkka, Juhksáhkka ja Uksáhkka ovat läsnä? Vahvistuuko seidan voima sitä joikaamalla? Miltä tuntuu ylisukupolvinen suru? Bálvvosbáiki-konsertin luohtien teemat ovat saamelaiskulttuurissa tuttuja sekä sen historiassa että nykypäivässä.  

Konsertin kokonaisuuden on yhdessä luonut monitaiteinen työryhmä, jossa Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsmanin kanssa työskentelevät Turkka Inkilä – elektroniikka, Ilkka Heinonen – jouhikko ja Marja Viitahuhta – videotaide. Konsertti on Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsmanin tohtoriprojektin toinen taiteellinen osio.

Áilu Valle on Inarissa vaikuttava rap-artisti, joka räppää pohjoissaameksi, suomeksi ja englanniksi. Vallen tyylissä yhdistyvät kantaaottava sanoma, teknisyys ja tunne. Hän on kotoisin kaukaa pohjoisesta, parinkymmenen ihmisen pienestä porokylästä Kaamasmukasta, Utsjoen kunnasta.

Áilu Valle on julkaissut kolme sooloalbumia pohjoissaameksi, "Dušši dušše duššat" (2012), "7" (2015) ja "Viidon sieiddit" (2019). Valle on palkittu mm. Renowned Sámi musician and luohti artist Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman joins forces with Spanish-Finnish composer Jaime Belmonte and the Earth Ears Ensemble to unveil "Ráidu," a unique collaborative piece blending the ancient art of yoiking with Western contemporary music. The piece offers a poignant exploration of the troubling history surrounding the wrongful theft of Sámi human remains for racial studies in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Commissioned by Hetta Music Days, "Ráidu" was premiered in April 2023 with Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman and the Norrbotten Neo Ensemble. This expanded version marks the first doctoral concert for Jaime Belmonte, exploring the intersection of luohti and Western contemporary classical music.

For the third year, the Fredrikstad Animation Festival presents its Animated Live concept. This year, the Finnish Sámi artist Ánnámáret in collaboration with the visual artist and animator Marja Viitahuhta presents a concert with live music and video art. Their film Flames may be familiar to previous festival audiences, as it was screened at the opening of FAF 2021.

Now in its second year, the cultural week will be full of activities to see and experience in all the village centres of Ohcejohka. Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman on mukana kevään 2023 Hetan musiikkipäivillä. Hän on mukana Sámi Comp -projektissa, jossa hän on säveltänyt vokaaliosuudet kahteen uuteen modernin klassisen musiikin teokseen kahden nykysäveltäjän kanssa. Tässä konsertissa kuullaan ensi kertaa Jaime Belmonten kanssa sävelletty Ráidu-teos.

Ánnámáret & Ilkka Heinonen Duo combines Sámi traditional vocal music yoik with the sound of ancient instrument jouhikko (Finnish bowed lyre). The sound of the duo is a mixture of Sámi yoik and modern folk music in a delicate, intimate form. The Duo will give a concert at the Centre des musiciens du monde in Montreal, where the musicians present their art and musical tradition in an acoustical context, close by the attendees.
